Planning to study in Canada? Before you can start your academic journey, you’ll need to apply for a study permit. Below is a list of the key documents and requirements you’ll need to prepare to ensure a smooth and successful application process.
Letter of Acceptance (LOA) From a Designated Learning Institution (DLI) in Canada
Valid Passport - Should be valid for the entire duration of your intended stay
Proof of Financial Support - Show you can pay for tuition, living expenses, and return transportation
Examples: bank statements, proof of paid tuition, GIC (for SDS), sponsor’s affidavit of support
Immigration Forms
Completed IMM 1294 (Application for Study Permit)
and other required forms
Proof of Identity
Passport-size photos (based on Canada’s photo requirements)
Statement of Purpose (SOP) - A letter explaining why you want to study in Canada and your study plan
English Language Test Results (if required by school)
IELTS, TOEFL, Duolingo, etc.
Biometrics- Fingerprints and photo (usually done at a Visa Application Centre)
Medical Exam (if required )- Especially if you’re staying more than 6 months or from a designated country
Police Clearance (if requested) - To show you have no criminal record
Visa Application Fee - CAD $150 (as of 2025), plus biometrics fee if applicable
